Al's Top 100 Guilty Pleasure Movies Part 3

Part 1
Part 2

60:  U.H.F.
imdb score:  6.8 | RT score:  57%

Guilty of: Despite achieving a cult status and receiving a lot of love from fans, the film was critically panned on its release.  Might have something to do with it being really silly, absurd, perhaps even juvenile.

What I say:  Having been a Weird Al Yanovkic fan for most of my life, I was pretty thrilled to see that the man put out his own movie.  When I got the disc and put it in for the first time...I found it kinda stupid.  On repeat viewings, however, I learned to appreciate the finer moments of the film; there are plenty of great jokes and parodies throughout.  It is a short, simple, lighthearted film that makes me laugh often, regardless of how silly it all is.  It’s exactly my kind of comedy from my kind of comedian, and despite a few dull parts, the movie ranks pretty high as one of my favorite slapstick comedies.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
59:  The Golden Compass
Best mount ever!
imdb score:  6.1 | RT score:  42%

Guilty of: Considered to have weak writing, story, characters.  Too rushed.  Piggy-backing on the success of Harry Potter.  Many differences between the book and film.  Doesn’t have the controversial bite of the original novel.  Still caused some controversy, as certain religious groups tried to boycott the film.

What I say:  Despite being watered down to some extent, I still feel that the film represents the book pretty well.  Any themes concerning religion are inherent to the story, so some of the key themes still stood out to me.   What matters the most, however, are the characters: it was a pleasure to see such a fine cast of characters (and their animal counterparts) brought to life.  I was even more enthralled to see the spectacle:  the action generally satisfied, and the epic polar bear fight was great.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
58:  Frankenhooker
This is probably what it feels like for many viewers.
imdb score:  5.8 | RT score:  60%

Guilty of: Low-budget and trashy.

What I say:  The film’s title in itself is something absurd and ridiculous, so I doubt anybody would go into this film expecting anything more than what it is.  Despite being so low-budget and silly, the film is pretty funny most of the time.  It’s light on the gore, surprisingly, and the film overall is more tasteful than it initially seems.  The outrageous plot and scenes do the film great justice, and makes for one of the most enjoyable B-movies in existence.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
57:  Snow White and the Huntsman
imdb score:  6.2 | RT score:  48%

Guilty of: Acting and pacing considered uneven, confused script.

What I say:  I never saw much wrong with this film.  A lot of folks seem to say it’s dull or boring, but I never felt that much bored with it.  I really enjoyed the film and its wickedly gothic spin on the classic fairy tale.  It has a good amount of action and visually-impressive scenes.  Above all, Charlize Theron is perfect as the evil queen.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
56:  Knowing
imdb score:  6.2 | RT score:  33%

Guilty of:
Absurd plot, cheesiness, takes itself too seriously.

What I say:  Holy crap, this film pulls out some incredible surprises.  Not only are the disaster scenes really incredible, but there’s some great intellectual potential buried in the plot.  By the film’s end, there are some jarring theological overtones and implications that put the story into a deeper context.  While many audiences find the concepts and execution laughable (for some odd reason), I found it quite enthralling and enlightening.  My only complaint is that the characters acted pretty irrationally in the last act, but otherwise, it’s all good!

My score:  4.5/5
--------------------
55:  Thir13en Ghosts
imdb score:  5.3 | RT score:  13%

Guilty of:
Unscary, soulless, considered terrible and trashy in a number of ways.  Uses a number in its title as a gimmick.

What I say:  Ah man, this film is wicked! Trashy, yes, but also really slick with the glass house and the wild editing effects.  There is a lot of painful-looking blood and gore here, especially for the one wicked scene where the guy is cut in half laterally by a pane of glass.  At the same time, it’s not a film that seems to take itself seriously.  For all its frenetic action, occasional laugh, and frequent bloodshed, Thir13en Ghosts is best viewed as a thrill ride rather than actual horror.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
54:  Deep Blue Sea
YUMMY!!!
imdb score:  5.7 | RT score:  56%

Guilty of: Considered unoriginal and unintelligent.

What I say:  In terms of action, this film has its fair share.  It’s always thrilling to watch these super-intelligent sharks hunting men and chewing them up.  I think everybody can agree that the scene with Samuel L. Jackson’s epic speech is a genuine surprise.  It doesn’t offer much for characters or plot, but it’s a fine creature thriller full of suspense and thrills.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
53:  The Sixth Day
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born here.
imdb score:  5.8 | RT score:  41%

Guilty of:
Routine, formulaic execution.

What I say:  This film has some really weird editing effects that threw me off at first, but for some odd reason, I kept coming back to this film for more.  Part of it is probably the action:  there are plenty of fancy shootouts and helicopter chases and everything.  I’ve also grown to appreciate the plot:  it does cover some interesting ground regarding genetic engineering and cloning gone wild.  It is pretty amusing to see two Arnold Schwarzeneggers on the screen together instead of just one.  Overall, the story goes through some fun and interesting plot twists and obstacles, and a plethora of cool sci-fi concepts and ideas keep it engaging.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
52:  Terminator:  Salvation
Dude, watch the road!
imdb score:  6.7 | RT score:  33%

Guilty of:
Lacks heart, weak storytelling.

What I say:  There were a few quibbles I had over this film, so it’ll never surpass the greatness of the first two films in my eyes.  But heck, it’s a Terminator film, and the filmmakers finally got around to showcasing the apocalyptic man-vs-machine struggle of the future in a full-length feature film.  There are some cool fights and battles, especially with some really huge terminators marching around.  The story shows some promise, as it not only establishes things that would loop back into the first two films, but also focuses itself on a character who’s trying to figure out if he’s man or machine.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
51:  Aeon Flux
Keep off the grass!
imdb score:  5.4 | RT score:  10%

Guilty of:
Considered dull and messy.  Weak story.

What I say:  Make no mistake, the MTV animated show is miles better than this feature film.  The show was really wild on a MC Escher level, with dialogue and content that just blows the mind.  This film pretty much dumbs everything down, so it’s nothing more than a straightforward action flick.  However, it is one slick and stylish action flick.  I really do enjoy the action, stunts, SFX, and the overall look and feel of the movie.  It’s pretty fantastic and visually impressive at times.  Just don’t expect it to be mentally impressive.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
50:  Omega Man
imdb score:  6.6 | RT score:  59%

Guilty of:
Considered far inferior to the original novel.  Considered cheesy and unintelligent.

What I say:  Granted that the I Am Legend film is better than this, Omega Man is pretty badass in its own right.  For the first part of the film, I was always entertained in watching Charlton Heston strolling through town like he owns the place, pretty much doing everything a man would do if he was the last man on Earth.  The rest of the film has plenty of action and thrills to satisfy.  Despite a few silly twists and turns, and the age of the film, it’s still one of my go-to examples of a fun post-apocalypse adventure.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
49:  BloodRayne
Keep those fake plastic swords away from me...
imdb score:  2.8 | RT score:  4%

Guilty of:
Nothing like the video game.  Weak on every level.  An Uwe Boll picture.

What I say:  I went into this film expecting nothing more than a B-movie, and the film delivered.  Yep, acting, dialogue, editing, and direction are pretty horrid all around, but I enjoyed the film all the same.  I loved Kristanna Lokken as the main character, even if her fight scenes seemed really clunky and awkward.  The film has a ton of blood and guts (especially in the unrated cut) which are just plain wicked! The best that can be said is that drag is not too terrible; even if the film is something terrible, there’s always something going on.

My score:  2.5/5
--------------------
48:  The Brain That Wouldn’t Die
imdb score:  3.7 | RT score:  36%

Guilty of:
Considered sleazy, cheap, stupid.

What I say:  I got a kick out of watching this short and silly affair.  It’s surprisingly trashy for a film made in 1959 (it wasn’t released until 1962); you can expect a surprising amount of blood and sleaze to this.  It’s also a film so riddled with ridiculous moments, dialogue, and acting, that it lends itself to some easy mockery.  A real doozy of a B-movie, this flick is good for a quick laugh and indulgence in absurdity.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
47:  Elektra
imdb score:  4.8 | RT score:  10%

Guilty of:
Takes itself too seriously, watered down, weak execution, dull.

What I say:  The fight scenes are pretty cool.  Strangely, though, I never thought of this as being action-packed; I actually enjoy watching this film more as a mellow hybrid of drama and action.  In between the slick fight scenes, the characters do take the time to breathe and develop some rather touching connections.  Of course, seeing the title character in a hot red dress is pretty appealing as well.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
46:  Resident Evil:  Apocalypse
Don't make me poke you.
imdb score:  6.0 | RT score:  21%

Guilty of:
Weak plot and creativity.

What I say:  As cool as the first Resident Evil film was, its ending left me wanting more.  Thankfully, I felt the sequel delivered, in huge portions.  It’s not a long film, but it’s crammed full of action and style.  Hardly a moment goes by without a major fight scene or without the characters running for their lives.  It’s always a pleasure to watch Milla Jovovich kicking butt, and the rest of the cast is fun.  How can I not love a film where characters ride motorcycles through church windows and blow things up with miniguns?

My score:  4.5/5
--------------------
45:  Zombie Strippers
I'd ask for a refund.
imdb score:  4.2 | RT score:  38%

Guilty of:
Poorly executed.

What I say:  Obviously, the stripping parts of this movie appeal.  I think I’m more impressed as to how well-paced the film is, given the amount of crazy bloody zombie-slaying there is, in addition to the often-amusing comedy.  It’s silly, outrageous, and gratuitous, and I love it that way.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
44:  Dragon Wars
imdb score:  3.7 | RT score:  27%

Guilty of:
Unfocused script, bad acting.

What I say:  The acting and writing in this film will induce laughter, make no mistake.  Most of this film is really bad and gaudy B-movie material.  What really makes it redeemable, however, are its special effects, which are surprisingly awesome.  The film’s last half has an excellent battle scene that pits helicopters against a hoard of dragons; it’s big, explosive, and a heck of a thrill ride.  I give this film the high points for being perfectly entertaining, even if it fails at everything else.

My score:  2.5/5
--------------------
43:  Bad Boys II
imdb score:  6.3 | RT score:  23%

Guilty of:
All style, no substance.  Unfunny.

What I say:  Probably the coolest looking movie of all time.  Even if the film has no real substance to it, the style is so cool, it’s mindblowing! The shoot-outs, with all the slow-motion bullets and bloodshed, are a real sight to behold.  The highway car chase is one of the best I’ve seen.  The film is a blast, it never really drags, and it’s just too cool to hate on.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
42:  2012
There goes the neighborhood...into the ocean...
imdb score:  5.8 | RT score:  39%

Guilty of:
Weak script, ridiculous in every way.

What I say:  The 2012 doomsday theory was ridiculous to begin with, so it’s almost as if this film tells the audience, “what, did you think the Earth’s crust would just fall apart? Then, what, we all get into these giant arks while the world floods over?” The film never fully takes itself seriously, and neither do I.  All the stupidity in the plot and characters makes the film easily laughable, with good humor.  Above all, however, the spectacle is phenomenal.  The disaster scenes, with entire cities crumbling and huge tidal waves crashing over the world’s tallest mountains, are probably the best ever created.  It’s a real awe-inspiring sight.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
41:  Judge Dredd
imdb score:  5.2 | RT score:  18%

Guilty of: Not sure if it wants to be ultra-violent or a self-parody.  Silly.

What I say:  Granted, it felt more serious and pulpy when I was a teenager, and thus it hasn’t aged well.  I still haven’t seen the new Dredd movie, but the source material definitely requires a more hardcore approach.  Regardless, I always did enjoy this 90s film for its entertaining blend of comedy, action, and impressive special effects.  I dug Sylvester Stallone as the title character.  Story is pretty light and silly, but even with all its cheese, I enjoyed the characters and the presence they projected.

My score:  4/5

Al's Top 100 Guilty Pleasure Movies Part 2

Part 1

80:  Resident Evil
imdb score:  6.6 | RT score:  34%

Guilty of:  Probably more hated by professional critics, still considered loud, formulaic, cheesy, and brainless.

What I say:  Chances are that if they cast Milla Jovovich in an Uwe Boll film with talking cows and a billion Jar Jar Binkses, I’d still see it, just for Milla.  She’s really hot and awesome in, well, all these films.  The film itself is really cool and fun.  It has just the right amount of action:  not too little, but not overly ambitious.  It’s a stylish and moody zombie flick I can chill to, surpassed only by its immediate sequel.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
79:  Armageddon
imdb score:  6.1 | RT score:  39%

Guilty of:  Considered loud, stupid, obnoxious, brainless, and messy.

What I say:  The comedy made me laugh, which is a big plus for any Michael Bay film.  The characters are endearing and fun, which is another benefit.  The action and special effects totally rock.  Most of the photography is gorgeous.  Even though I don’t like this film as much as I used to, it sure does beat the snot out of Deep Impact.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
78:  Beneath the Planet of the Apes
They picked the worst place for a fight...
imdb score:  6.1 | RT score:  41%

Guilty of: Mostly considered cheap and stupid, especially compared to the first original film.

What I say:  The bomb-worshipping mutants are cooler and s**t! This sequel is certainly not as deep or sophisticated as the first film, but I’ve always dug the style.  It’s a raw and pulpy sci-fi flick that pits men, apes, and mutants in crazy bloody brawls.  The film is also quite daring in its ending:  a little stupid in the way the franchise painted itself into a corner, but it’s still a pretty bold move nonetheless.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
77:  Mission Impossible II
imdb score:  5.9 | RT score:  57%

Guilty of:  All style, no substance.

What I say:  I won’t deny that the style of this film really got in the way when I first saw it.  John Woo went nuts with the slow-motion, the pigeons, the fire, the impossible stuntwork, and everything.  It was only in repeat viewings that I learned to accept the style as it was:  cool and wild! More importantly, I learned to appreciate the characters and the romance, which aren’t too terrible.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
76:  The Fantastic 4:  Rise of the Silver Surfer
Stop following me!
imdb score:  5.6 | RT score:  37%

Guilty of: Considered juvenile, simple, and lacking in substance.

What I say:  It’s a short and silly picture, and I do think that it’s a notable drop in quality from the first film.  I still enjoy the action and special effects:  the Silver Surfer is one cool dude.  Most of the humor is pretty decent, especially since it’s built pretty well around the dynamics of the characters.  It probably could have been better in many ways, but it’s still good for a quick thrill.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
75:  Trail of the Screaming Forehead

imdb score:  5.5 | RT score:  Not Available

My head is killing me...
Guilty of: It’s bad, trust me.

What I say:  This is one real doozy of a film:  it makes me wonder who comes up with this crazy stuff.  The film is about an invasion of aliens posing as foreheads, which latch onto people and take them over.  Their one weakness:  bells! A man would have to be crazy to think this film sounds intelligent in any way.  However, with its incredibly awful dialogue, it is an instant comedy classic.  It’s a film so ridiculously written with such ridiculous scenes that it’s hilarious.  There really is no other film like it!

My score:  2.5/5
--------------------
74:  Mission to Mars
imdb score:  5.4 | RT score:  25%

Guilty of: Considered messy, shallow, and stupid, especially with a haphazard script that borrows from too many other films (especially 2001:  A Space Odyssey).

What I say:  Despite some drag, the film does have visually impressive moments, especially in the opening scenes with the awesome sand-storm-worm thing.  I always found the ending plot twists pretty interesting.  Likable characters don’t hurt either.  To me, this film goes hand-in-hand with most other space operas (or possibly other films about Mars).

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
73:  Lost in Space
imdb score:  4.9 | RT score:  27%

Guilty of: Silly, contrived, bland, unengaging.

What I say:  The space battles totally rock.  Other key scenes, such as the planet crumbling apart, are just as awesome.  Scenes in between are pretty corny and silly, but the film overall does have a certain lighthearted spirit that makes it fun and easily-digestible.  As far as the story goes, I have grown to appreciate the time-travel mechanics the film uses.  Substance may still be pretty light, but I do enjoy the spectacle.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
72:  Wild Wild West
imdb score:  4.6 | RT score:  21%

Guilty of: Weak characters, unfunny comedy.

What I say:  Well, the comedy really isn’t all that funny.  I do get a kick out of the giant robo-spider thing that runs amok in the film’s final half.  The whole film is loaded with wild and interesting steampunk gizmos.  Barry Sonnenfeld applies his usual flair for weird and wild visuals.  Above all, the film is fast-paced and has loads of action.  Funny thing is, I never thought I’d associate “fast-paced” and “loads of action” to westerns.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
71:  Next
Everybody looks like this when watching these movies.
imdb score:  6.1 | RT score:  28%

Guilty of: Poorly motivated characters, plot holes.

What I say:  The film has issues, certainly, but it does have some visually impressive scenes.  Action and style rarely disappoint.  The film takes its core concept and plays around with it in some interesting and entertaining ways.  It helps that Nicholas Cage plays it cool and is fun to watch here.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
70:  Babylon A.D.
imdb score:  5.4 | RT score:  7%

Guilty of: Considered weak and poorly constructed in terms of story, script, and action.

What I say:  If you haven’t guessed already, yes, the action and visuals are cool.  Biggest standouts will be in watching snowmobiles trying to outrun robot drones, and the slow-motion rocket exploding.  Story and characters didn’t jive with me at first, but I grew to appreciate them on repeat viewings.  It probably could have been better in some ways, but I learned to take it for what it is.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
69:  Ghost Ship
imdb score:  5.3 | RT score:  13%

Guilty of: Plot considered weak, not scary.

What I say:  First thing’s first:  the opening scene is wicked! I think it should hold the record for most torsos severed all at once! From then on, the film has its share of interesting moments, but it all really comes together in the last act.  The film’s major plot twist not only puts the whole thing into perspective, but I also felt it was one cool concept.  It builds up to a really wicked final shot, and thus a satisfying horror flick.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
68:  Battlefield Earth
imdb score:  2.4 | RT score:  2%

Guilty of: Pretty much considered one of the worst, if not THE worst, movies of all time.

What I say:  When I saw this, I was a mere high-schooler.  I didn’t care for the overuse of dutch camera angles, or the cheesiness of John Travolta’s acting, or the stupidity of certain plot points.  All I knew was that I saw harrier jets chasing down alien ships, and it was cool! The ending had one of the best planetary explosions I had ever seen, and I was blown away! These days, I can see what makes the film bad.  I still don’t think it’s all that bad, but bad all the same.  I’ll still always enjoy it for its action, and for bringing some of the more memorable scenes from the book to life.

My score:  2.5/5
--------------------
67:  The Mummy Returns
Cat fights of the ancients.
imdb score:  5.5 | RT score:  33%

Guilty of: Considered weak with the story and characters.

What I say:  At the time, I thought it was actually better than the first film.  If nothing else, the action and visuals are definitely bigger and more ambitious:  there are a bunch of awesome fight scenes, the Army of Anubis is a sight to behold, and various scenes here and there never fail to entertain.  While I’ll admit now that the first film is fresher and more original, I enjoy them both really well and frequently revisit this sequel to relive the adventure.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
66:  The Marine
Method acting at gunpoint.
imdb score:  4.6 | RT score:  20%

Guilty of: Overblown, weak plot and characters, derivative.

What I say:  I was surprised, this film was a blast! The action is frequent and incredible, with loads of impressive scenes.  It is a pretty simple story with ridiculous proportions, but if I want a quick and easy dose of big fiery action, this would be one of my top choices.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
65:  The Happening
Something is happening off screen...I think...
imdb score:  5.1 | RT score:  17%

Guilty of: Considered incoherent and unconvincing.  Nobody really believed the spiel about the plants rising up against the human race.  Also panned for poor acting and writing.

What I say:  For the longest time, I was accustomed to regarding all of M. Night Shyamalan’s work as something intelligent, with a strong Hitchcockian vibe.  Even when The Happening came out, I regarded it as Hitchcockian, and I felt it delivered.  The film has a very interesting style and strong photography.  I felt it presented its concept in a manner that’s straight and sincere.  I found the drama compelling, along with the characters.  The hate over this film has always confused me, because I never saw much wrong with it.

My score:  3.5/5

--------------------
64:  My Science Project
"The future is a funky groove!"
imdb score:  5.6 | RT score:  20%

Guilty of: Cheesy, bad writing and direction.

What I say:  Like many films of the 80s, this one knows what the meaning of “fun” is.  It is cheesy to some degree, but it sure is fun.  Even the cheesy dialogue and lines are fun.  What I like best, however, is the story and special effects:  I always found the central concept of a space-time warp going out of control very interesting.  It gets really random and weird as the story goes on, but that’s part of what makes this film such a wild and fun trip.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
63:  Alien vs. Predator
imdb score:  5.5 | RT score:  21%

Guilty of: They took two R-rated franchises and watered them down to a weak and dull PG-13 fare.  Poor characters don’t help.

What I say:  I do agree that some more blood and guts might have helped this film a bit, the unrated cut does have a little more oomph to it.  In time, I learned to forgive the film of many of its flaws, so I can just sit back and enjoy the thrilling smackdown between the famous monsters.  If nothing else, the film does a great job of staging the fights between the aliens and predators, while adhering to the established traits and abilities that make each creature so wicked (even if the chestbursters gestate way too rapidly in this film).  I was always intrigued by the flashback scenes which tie the two races together; it’s somewhat smart stuff.  Even though AvP is widely considered one of the weakest entries for both the Alien and Predator movies, it has plenty of redeemable moments.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
62:  The Day After Tomorrow
So, this will happen on Friday?
imdb score:  6.3 | RT score:  45%

Guilty of: Considered absurd with bad dialogue.  Ice chases people.

What I say:  Twisters rip up Los Angeles, giant tidal waves wash over New York, and then the world freezes over.  How cool is that? If nothing else, the special effects and mass destruction are really top-notch spectacles worth watching repeatedly.  The plot is pretty silly and the characters border on the brink of stupidity, but by disaster movie standards, this film is relatively fun and mostly well-made (remember, disaster movie standards.  Anybody who thinks this movie is bad should go out and see Arctic Blast or Birdemic; now those are some real disasters!).

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
61:  Troll 2
Death by popcorn flicks.
imdb score:  2.4 | RT score:  0%

Guilty of: Horrible acting, writing, direction, plot, story, costumes, cinematography, production value, music…yeah, everything.

What I say:  One of my top contenders for best movie that’s so-bad-it’s-good.  The dialogue is so terrible, it’s often hilarious.  Just about every scene in this movie defies all sense of normal logic.  At times, it’s kinda hard to tell if this film is trying to be serious and was just made poorly, or if the filmmakers purposefully put their heart into making a self-consciously bad movie.  As the latter, it’s highly successful.  As the former, it’s still a hoot for being a film that’s unintentionally funny.

My score:  2.5/5

Al's Top 100 Guilty Pleasure Movies Part 1

Cinema is an ocean of limitless possibilities, and we, the audience, stride along the beach of this ocean, always looking for treasures that may wash ashore.  Each passing season brings a tide of a particular sort:  every summer, a tide of blockbusters washes over us with a wealth of polished stones.  Every fall, the Oscar bait is unearthed.  Now and then, we come across random surprises.  No matter what, most of us actively seek out the gleaming treasures:  we’re always looking for the next Godfather, the next Dark Knight, the next Amour, the next Matrix, or whatever else.  In our pursuit of all things golden and bejeweled – the films that everybody agrees are great and are praised by the critics – we often step over the plain-looking rocks, the transparent sea glass, the empty shells, or the ugly trash.  Few of us will stop to admire these failed and forgotten pieces, admiring them for values that others don’t care about.

At the very least, enjoying films that everybody else dislikes is a matter of personal taste.  At the most, it’s a bold stand against haters and critics, and maybe an act of rebellion.  Either way, there are a healthy number of film I enjoy, but few others do.  Sometimes, I know certain films are bad, but I enjoy them anyway for whatever reason.  Other times, I’m perplexed as to why certain films are universally hated.  I don’t really care what other people may think of my tastes:  these are the films that make me laugh, make me feel excited, and capture my imagination in different ways.  These are the films that beckon me, as if to say “come on, watch me! You know you wanna!”

These are my guilty pleasure films:  the ones I love, but receive little love elsewhere.  Some of them will be movies that are so bad, they’re good.  Others are novelties that I enjoy.  Most will be failed blockbusters and box-office bombs, and many may have been forgotten in time.  For me, however, all of these films have had me coming back for more.  In fact, most of them are films I disliked at first, but grew to love them on repeat viewings.

In a way, I tend to value these films more than what is on my Top 100 Favorite Movies list.   I suspect it’s because some of these are more unique, or they’re more entertaining and enthralling, or just plain funnier.  Or, it could be because a lot of these films have been with me my whole life.  Chances are that you’ll read through this list and think of me as an unsophisticated idiot.  Whatever.  Good or bad, I love all these films, and I probably wouldn’t recommend them to anybody else but me.

Without further ado, here is my Top 100 Favorite Guilty Pleasure Movies! All of these films have either ranked "rotten" on rottentomatoes.com (a percentage, usually less than 50%), OR achieved less than a 6.0 (out of 10) on imdb.com.  These are not in order of the scores, however; due to the combination of entertainment value, resonance, and replay value, these films are simply ordered based on which ones would I watch more than the other.

Here it goes...
--------------------
100:  Satan Met a Lady
imdb score:  6.0 | RT score:  Not Available

Guilty of:  Misconceived and silly.

What I say:  This is basically an adaptation of The Maltese Falcon, as a comedy.  Somehow, they took a serious, gritty, hard-boiled thriller and morphed it into a silly, irreverent comedy.  It’s certainly not the stuff dreams are made of, but the film is short, sweet, simple, has a decent style, and a few amusing moments.  It’s good for a quick laugh or two.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
99:  Dungeons and Dragons
So where can I get blue lipstick from?
imdb score:  3.6 | RT score:  10%

Guilty of: Cheap, silly, horrible writing and acting, and some folks are offended by Marlon Wayan’s character, calling him a racial stereotype.

What I say:  Oh man, this film sure is cheesy.  It might even be the cheesiest of all the films I’ve seen.  Even Jeremy Irons’ performance is cheesy:  he ramps the cheese up to critical mass! It’s a cheap and silly film; I was initially drawn to it for its special effects, but even those are pretty weak.  What matters here, however is the execution.  Sure, the special effects are cheap, but they’re well-executed, and bring some fairly cool dragon battles to life.  The film hardly drags, and it has the right spirit and tone.  As a lighthearted adventure, the film is at least partway successful.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
98:  Entrapment
Be honest...this is the only scene you enjoy watching in this movie...
imdb score:  6.1 | RT score:  38%

Guilty of: Weak plot, considered a bore.

What I say:  Strange though it is to pair sixty-something Sean Connery with twenty or thirty-something Catherine Zeta Jones, they share some interesting scenes together, and pull off some cool heists that felt fairly high-tech at the time this film was made.  While films like the Ocean’s 11 remake and the Italian Job remake will remain my personal favorite heist films, I’ve enjoyed Entrapment just as well over the years.  Watching CZJ moving through the lasers in a skin-tight outfit didn’t hurt either.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
97:   Batman and Robin
Holy s**t Batman!
imdb score:  3.6 | RT score:  12%

Guilty of:  Too much cheese, too many bad jokes, horrible acting and writing, too much flair and style over substance.

What I say:  This one definitely ranks pretty high on the cheese-o-meter.  It can be hard to take the onslaught of ridiculous dialogue (rendered exceptionally ridiculous with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s constant one-liners, Uma Thurman’s overly-dramatic monologues, and George Clooney trying too hard to act cool) and the onslaught of bright colors and gaudy production value.  I still give it credit for entertaining:  the action is certainly frequent and flashy.  Humor can be a huge hit-or-a-miss, but the overall tone is appealing.  Despite all its stupidity, there is something about B&R that keeps me entertained and sometimes coming back for more.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
96:  Final Fantasy:  The Spirits Within
imdb score:  6.4 | RT score:  44%

Guilty of:  Dull story, no emotional impact.

What I say:  When I first saw this film, I was as enthralled as I was pleased.  It was technically impressive for its fantastic digital renderings:  I still think it contains the best and most real-looking animations for human beings to date.  There is action to be had.  As far as the story goes, I really dug it when I was younger, and parts of it stood out to me.  Today, not nearly as much, else it would have ranked higher.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
95:   Virus

imdb score:  4.6 | RT score:  9%

Guilty of:
Predictable, poor story, poor acting.

What I say:  Parts of it made me laugh.  Parts of it were wicked.  If nothing else, the special effects are cool and it’s pretty exciting to watch this killer alien cyborg running amok.  It’s definitely lacking in story development and originality, but it makes up for it by just being loud and fun.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
94:   Star Trek V:  The Final Frontier
In reality, Kirk is only two feet off the ground.
 imdb score:  5.2 | RT score:  21%

Guilty of:
Well, it’s an odd-numbered Trek film.  Everybody knows the even-numbered ones are the best.  Also, largely considered the worst of the series due to its plot, poor special effects, being boring, iffy handling of theology, and Sybok.

What I say:
I’d say I enjoyed this film as much as the other old Trek films.  The action is plentiful enough, but it’s the comedy that makes this movie fun.  Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty exchange lots of amusing gags and anecdotes here.  Most other complaints never really bothered me that much; I was just thrilled to watch the classic characters do their thing.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
93:   X:  The Movie
You know things get serious when your back is on fire...
imdb score:  6.0 | RT score:  Not Available

Guilty of:
Not as good as the original manga (or the anime series that came later), not enough room for character or story development.

What I say:
I totally agree that this anime film doesn’t do the whole story much justice.  The original story calls for juggling fourteen different characters on opposite sides of an epic conflict, so cramming all that into a ninety minute feature is pretty skimpy and frustrating.  It’s made even worse with shoddy English dubbing.  Still, the action and animation quality is pretty darn cool, and the film does capture the barebones essence of the whole thing.  Since the movie came out before the manga’s finale, it also has the benefit of a wicked, punctual, somewhat satisfying ending.  I may continue to watch the full-length series for a complete story, but this film offers enough of everything for a quick and condensed experience.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
92:  Barb Wire
Baywatch took a very interesting turn...
imdb score:  3.1 | RT score:  29%

Guilty of:  Bad acting, dull and gaudy.

What I say:  Pamela Anderson.  Nuff said!

My score:  2.5/5
--------------------
91:  Wing Commander
 imdb score:  3.8 | RT score:  11%

Guilty of:
Clichéd, with bad dialogue and cheap production.

What I say:
While the special effects haven’t aged that well, I always loved them for bringing these fleets of spaceships to life in front of a colorful deep-space backdrop.  The action is often quite cool.  I actually wish there were more movies like this that have such explosive and stylish space battles.  Plot, characters, and overall production are weak indeed, but I’m willing to put up with it.  At times, it comes off as a fun, lighthearted adventure.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
90:   Skyline
imdb score:  4.4 | RT score:  15%

Guilty of:
Bad story, bad dialogue, stupid characters making dumb decisions.

What I say:
Now here are some special effects that stand up really well.  If nothing else, this flick does a great job of taking a standard story with standard shooting locations and filling it all up with a slick and explosive spectacle.  In this day and age, alien invasion movies have become a dime-a-dozen, so this feels like more of the same, and all the stupid characters don’t help.  I still had a blast watching it, even if for all the wrong reasons.

My score:  3/5
--------------------

89:   Hulk
imdb score:  5.7 | RT score:  62%

Guilty of: Boring, too much talking, fake-looking special effects, inconsistencies in the Hulk’s size, mutant poodles.

What I say:  Yeah, it takes a while for this film to get going, but once it does, it’s like, holy crap! The Hulk picked up a freaking tank and hurled it miles away! He beat down helicopters and rode a plane to the edge of the atmosphere! When the action hits and the Hulk comes out, the filmmakers really tried their best to make the Hulk pull off some incredible stuff.  Extensive exploration of the characters may drag down the experience quite a bit,  and the use of transitions and split-screens are very trippy, but I’ve always felt it was worth sitting through for a fantastic final act.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
88:   Star Trek:  Insurrection
imdb score:  6.3 | RT score:  56%

Guilty of:
Odd-numbered Trek movie.  Plays out too much like a 2-hour episode of the show.  Thus, it’s more of the same, dull, contrived.

What I say:
Granted that it does feel like a series episode rather than a feature film, I always did enjoy the space battles (especially the nebula battle, which is a thing of beauty), the shuttle pursuits, the humor, and the overall tone of the film.  It’s just another fun adventure for the Next Generation crew, and that’s not a totally bad thing.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
87:   Maximum Overdrive
This truck is so evil!
imdb score:  5.0 | RT score:  17%

Guilty of:
Absurd plot, annoying characters, silliness.

What I say:
I’ve always gotten a kick out of watching this film.  What could be cooler than watching a bunch of machines (especially trucks, bulldozers, a hum-vee) rising up against humans? The only thing more cool and wicked than this are the Terminator or Matrix franchises.  As it is, Stephen King plays this out with his usual campy B-movie charm (not just as writer, but also as director!), and I find it quite charming indeed.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
86:  The Time Machine (2002)
The future may not be bright, but at least it's orange.
imdb score:  5.8 | RT score:  29%

Guilty of:  Switches from compelling drama to action/adventure territory too fast, poor writing.

What I say:  Yeah, the 1960 film remains the best possible film adaptation of HG Well’s classic story.  It’s pretty odd that Simon Wells (the author’s great-grandson) changed things up with this newer adaptation, and he does to with mixed effect.  The best that can be said is that the visuals are pretty cool, especially during the actual time-travelling.  I think most audiences agree that the opening scenes, which underscore the reasons why the guy built the machine, are the most compelling.  The rest is just a brainless actioner.  Overall, it’s a pretty fun ride anyway.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
85:  The Room
Oh hi guys!
imdb score:  3.3 | RT score:  35%

Guilty of:  EVERYTHING!

What I say:  No really, everything about this movie is terrible, make no mistake.  The sets are as plain as can be, and the photograph and editing are equally stagnant.  What really takes the cake here will be the acting and writing:  it has to be seen to be believed.  Nearly every line is so terrible, so forced, so illogical, it’s awesomely hilarious.  The Room is stupid and cheap, but it stands as one of the best so-bad-it’s-good type of films of all time.

My score:  2.5/5
--------------------
84:  The World Is Not Enough
Skiing is a dangerous sport.
imdb score:  5.8 | RT score:  29%

Guilty of: Standard plot, iffy writing, Denise Richards.

What I say:  At one point (well, the time of its release), this was my favorite James Bond picture.  I loved the action, and I was really taken by the story and its characters.  These days, I got to admit that my enthusiasm has waned a lot, and the film does feel very plain and standard.  I still give it credit for taking a few bold twists, for having a bad guy that implies something greater, for having an awesome femme fatale, and for its smashing boat chase scene.

My score:  4/5
--------------------
83:  Heavy Metal 2000
Whoa.  Nice...axe...
imdb score:  5.2 | RT score:  0%

Guilty of:  Focuses on one story instead of having an anthology of stories.  Bloated, dull, uninspired, cheap.

What I say:  Sure, it’s only one story, but I had fun watching it.  I loved the heroine and I enjoyed watching her kick everybody’s butt! The animation may not be the best, but it looks smooth, and is nowhere near as gaudy as the first film.  Occasional bits of gratuitous sex and violence don’t hurt either.  It’s a thrilling piece of pulp sci-fi, and I kinda wish there are more stories like this in the genre.

My score:  3/5
--------------------
82:  The Darkest Hour
This is why it's dangerous to breakdance on the street.
imdb score:  4.9 | RT score:  12%

Guilty of:  Mindless, with terrible characters and a weak plot.

What I say:  You know, I didn’t think this was nearly as bad as I expected.  Despite a few stupid parts, the film is successful at being fast-paced and entertaining.  I liked the concept of invisible electric aliens.  I enjoyed the special effects, regardless of how cheap they looked.  Overall, the film never really bored me, and I appreciate it for that.

My score:  3.5/5
--------------------
81:   The Man With the Screaming Brain
This is how you'll appear when you reach the end of this list.
imdb score:  5.5 | RT score:  33%

Guilty of:
Considered weak, pointless, and unfunny.

What I say:
Well, the film is pretty cheap and silly, but it did make me laugh.  I give huge props to Bruce Campbell, who’s as macho and funny as ever, and flexes some decent acting muscle as a man who literally fights himself.  It gets really crazy when the guy’s wife becomes a robot.  It makes for a pretty fun tongue-in-cheek type of B-movie.

My score:  3.5/5
